RESIDENT ADVISOR (RA) - SEMESTER PROGRAMS

A student resident advisor (RA) is one of the purest expressions of ACU’s mission to “educate students for Christian service and leadership throughout the world.”  As a unique and indispensable part of the Study Abroad team, an RA enhances the student experience abroad through peer leadership, community formation, accountability, and spiritual development. The nature of the living/learning community of Study Abroad, along with the multi-faceted roles required of RAs, primes a student in this position with essential life skills, invaluable leadership development, and personal growth.

The RA role will vary between programs based on the personality and strengths of an individual RAs and program leadership. However, distilled to its most essential function, a Resident Advisor (RA) serves their program by providing practical administrative support and through developing relationships with students to support them as they learn about themselves, their relationship with Christ, and the ACU community while living in a different cultural context.

Important Considerations:

  • Semester RAs are required to attend the Res Life x Study Abroad training course in the Spring semester before their departure. This course is not required to be taken for credit.

  • Semester RAs also typically depart one week in advance of their scheduled group departure for training and orientation with local program staff. This on-site training period ensures RAs know their local environment and are physically and mentally prepared for the semester ahead.

  • Beyond ACU’s normal travel policies, there are no additional travel restrictions (i.e. they do not need to remain in their host city for any reason) for students serving in the RA role.

Scholarship/Compensation:

Semester RAs are compensated with a scholarship of $4,000 and a cell phone stipend of $500.

Eligibility:

  • Semester RAs must be currently enrolled students in a Study Abroad program.

  • Probation: Students who have been placed on probation before or during their RA role are not permitted to serve as RAs.

  • Res Life x Study Abroad Training: Students are required to attend the Res Life RA training course which occurs the spring semester before their planned departure.

RESIDENT ADVISOR (RA) - SUMMER PROGRAMS

A student resident advisor (RA) is one of the purest expressions of ACU’s mission to “educate students for Christian service and leadership throughout the world.”  As a unique and indispensable part of the Study Abroad team, an RA enhances the student experience abroad through peer leadership, community formation, accountability, and spiritual development. The nature of the living/learning community of Study Abroad, along with the multi-faceted roles required of RAs, primes a student in this position with essential life skills, invaluable leadership development, and personal growth.

Summer study abroad programs are fast-paced and require RAs who are familiar with the local context and who are capable of assisting local staff with critical logistics and program management from the time they arrive. Therefore, Summer RAs must be former semester study abroad alumni, who preferably studied at the site where they plan to serve as RA for the summer terms.

Scholarship/Compensation:
Summer RAs are compensated with roundtrip flights, $3,000, and a cell phone stipend of $300.

Eligibility:

  • Summer RAs must be former semester study abroad alumni, preferably of the site where they plan to serve as RA during the summer terms.

  • Summer RAs typically depart around May 10th to be prepared for summer groups arriving on/after May 15th. They are required to serve both Summer I and Summer II terms.

  • Probation: Students who have been placed on probation before or during their RA role are not permitted to serve as RAs.

  • Res Life x Study Abroad Training: Students are required to attend the Res Life RA training course which occurs the spring semester before their planned departure.
